Veterinary Ophthalmology Technician

We are currently growing leaps and bounds, and our Ophthalmology department is looking for a full- time technician to join the team. In this department, you will work alongside the Ophthalmologist and Ophthalmology lead nurse in a fast-paced department that serves the local canines and felines of northern Colorado.  

 

Ophthalmology Technician Duties 

  • Check-in clients and patients, obtain appropriate medical history, perform a Schirmer Tear Test, Fluorescein Staining, and Tonometry as each case dictates 

  • Restrain patients during examinations 

  • Discuss diagnoses with clients, address concerns, offer further resources and information to help guide decisions or empower clients to make appropriate changes in the household 

  • Triage phone calls daily 

  • Induction, monitoring, and recovery of patients in minor and major procedures and surgeries 

  • Client and hospital education about the wonderful world of eyes! 

 

 

Hospital Nursing/Technician Duties 

  • Triage phone calls, appointments or walk-ins as necessary.  Reviewing medical records as necessary to assist in those triages 

  • Perform appropriate patient restraint for examinations and procedures 

  • Understand most major illnesses and the appropriate treatment 

  • Acquire, prepare and ship laboratory specimens (Heska in-house, Antech outside lab, other labs as requested)  

  • General nursing care such as: accurately obtaining and assessing patient vitals (temperatures, pulses/heart rate, respirations, blood pressure, pain score, etc.), and auscultation of the lungs 

  • Perform general venipuncture, peripheral/central/arterial catheter placement and maintenance 

  • Induction, surgical skin preparation, monitor and recovery of surgical patients for minor or major surgical procedures 

  • Admitting and discharging patients, client communication and education, answering phone calls and scheduling appointments  

  • Cleaning, stocking, general organization and maintenance of ICU/Isolation equipment and supplies 

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:  

  • Knowledge of basic veterinary practices, procedures and terminology with willingness to pursue further education equaling Certified/Licensed Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Technician Specialist (ACVECCT-VTS) status.  

  • Ability to appropriately handle, lift and restrain animals (dogs, cats) and stand for long periods of time. 

  • Ability to perform veterinary medical procedures (i.e. administer CPR, draw blood, administer medications and fluids, and assess and triage patients.) 

  • Ability to communicate well with other technicians and doctors regarding the needs of the patients 

  • Have basic organizational and computer skills. 

  • Preferred: Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).  At least one year of recent experience in veterinary Ophthalmology.
